City-Region Food Systems and Biodiversity Conservation: The Case Study of the Entre-Douro-e-Minho Agrarian Region

Agriculture is the dominant form of land management with at least half species in Europe depending on agricultural habitats. Additionally, there a growing demand for more sustainable food system. In that context, system relocalization and City-Region Food Systems (CRFS) are proposed resilience environmental sustainability. This work represents first attempt to map potential foodshed (PF) Entre-Douro-e-Minho agrarian region, assessing its impacts landscape heterogeneity ecological value. The methodological approach, developed Geographic Information System, aimed (1) suitability study area, (2) propose PF scenario, (3) assess cover changes structure through metrics. Outcomes this research reflect land-use optimization concerning uses, depicting strong presence temporary crops landscape. They also emphasize need greater detail Land Use Plans, due vulnerability coastal areas. Moreover, results revealed an increased related value, highlighting integration properties into CRFS planning as line contributing implementation use compatible biodiversity conservation.
